Interesting; can you give the precise location via tr# and time from start?

Yeah, I realised I should have included times in the first place. Just to preface the timings, the key change reflects the key change in at least one circulating copy. The version I have is almost all from a very good sounding source (presumably the 8-tracks) until the pre-Alligator tuning. Then, instead of the patch from the same/another good sounding source as found in RTV2N2, the my version cuts to a slower and lower key end of Alligator into Caution. I guess it's an FM copy or something? Anyway...timings:

* The entire first disc and up until 12:14 of Spanish Jam, the source is the 8-tracks. From then until the end (aside from a small section of Alligator) one, maybe two more hissy 2-track source(s) is/are used - FM?
* At 12:01 in Alligator, the source changes to the 8-tracks/some other source superior to the hissy source. The key and tempo do not change noticeably and the change is virtually seemless to me. NB: This is a section from the Anthem album I think (although I haven't listened to Anthem in quite a while).
* At 12:47 the source changes again. So does the key and tempo. The source is similar to the hissy 2-track source used for most of Alligator but, in my opinion, is superior. It is less hissy. A comparison between it and the pre-Alligator 8-track patch shows a clearer drum sound. I think this could be a 2-track SBD recording rather than an FM recording. Just a theory.
* This source continues to the end. The rest of Alligator and Caution are great and don't sound too slow but they're definitely playing Caution at a lower key than the E that it is usually in (rough tuning notwithstanding).

The key change is incredibly obvious, which is why I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and have been assuming/hoping that it was a change of key by the band. I'm doubting it less and less though - it's most definitely just a slower source, hence the lower key and slightly slower tempo.

I don't want to open the can of worms that was the Road Trips 1979 downloads fiasco but this seems to me like another deliberate non-speed correction of an official release. It's just so damn obvious...I can't figure out if I'm reading too much into it or that they decided that the integrity of the audio was more important than speed correcting the "best available source".

As I said, this release is great. I'm not even that miffed that the "from the 8-tracks" thing is a bit misleading: I think the Alligator> Caution is the best part of the show and it's clearly not from the 8-tracks. Might have been nice to point this out earlier though.

Anyway, thoughts?

Oh yeah, there it is! Plain as day...I tried listening to only Phil in left channel, but it drops out right at the critical moment, 12:03 or so, and Jerry soundly speeds up! Sounds almost like a reel tape catching at the beginning and going too fast for 2-3" if you recall what that sounded like...then it seems to settle down, and all you have is the quality difference (which I agree with too). I can't keep all the 2/8 tr and patch info straight, BUT defn agree at that point there is a 1) speed issue, and 2) change in quality for a longer period...

Not distracting though...til now!!! You BASTARD!

I noticed this too - I wasn't even paying attention, I was doing work or something and the change stuck out like a sore thumb.
